taggy love

One thing you must understand about our family is we take special blankets VERY seriously. My boys each have them and in case of fire one of us grabs the kids WITH their blankets and the other grabs the laptops.

Ryan first fell in love with his blanket around 6 months. I purchased a back up, and then a 3rd back up a few months later. He started calling it tag, which turned into taggy. Now, 3.5 years later taggy is a HE and his best friend next to Grandma. He has his "favorite" which he labeled as number 1 taggy and then the others are number 2 and 3, yes he knows the difference and will inspect them all before cuddling up.

The most important part of the blanket is the tag or label, without it there would be no point. He used to suck on it, now he just obsessively rubs it in between his fingers, on his feet, on his stomach, and in his ear. He also does this weird tongue sucking thing that mimics a nursing suck. He's done it as long as I can remember and will start it every time he sees his blanket, like an instinct.  He can't sleep without it, he insists on dragging it all over the house and we finally said it can't come in the car with us anymore unless we will be gone for a LONG time. Twice, the tag has actually fallen off and you would have thought someone actually died in front of him. I have sewn them back on and went over it a few more times for good measure.

When Ryan was about a year old I bought another one KIND of like his tag, thinking he would take it as an acceptable replacement. Wow was I wrong. I held onto it, I actually used the fuzzy brown side for newborn photos way back in the day. When West was born I pulled it out of a baby box and had it near by but didn't really use it as he was swaddled or slept in our bed (and you aren't supposed to use blankets, right) When he was a little older I just like cuddling with it and him so it made more appearances  I actually called it "Weston's taggy" one day and hubs looked at me like I was crazy. I think his words were "not THAT again" Eventually he became pretty fond of the blanket. When he was 7 months old I found him in his crib, with the taggy part, rubbing it on his feet just like Ryan does. And that was that.

Weston is obsessed with his blanket just as much as Ryan is his, he loops his fingers in the fold of the tag and rubs it on his face when he's tired. He gets really grumpy if I leave it in his bed after nap and must have it whenever he's sad. He is well aware that Ryan and him both have their own special blanket and he will always give Ryan's to him if he finds it. It's like they understand the sacredness of "the taggy" and it is respected in our house. You don't have to share it with anyone, don't you dare take your brothers away from him, and if your brother is sad find his taggy for him.

Do your kids have a special blanket, lovey, or animal they just have to have?

things to remember.

I tend to get so caught up in the day to day of parenting these sweet boys. The laundry is never ending, the dishes pile up, the timeouts seem endless some days.

But today I just enjoyed it. I adore the beauty in the simple things, in the ebb and flow of life.

I love the way the light falls on Ryan's strawberry blonde hair. I love the way he tries to be like daddy by "doing homework on the computer". I love his giggle when I catch him in my bed cuddling with his blankets. I love the way he is in tune with the sights and sounds around him. I love the way he loves me.

I love the way he sucks on his tongue when he is tired, like his body subconsciously remembers the nursing latch from so long ago.

I love the way West admires his big brother. I love the way he chases after him and laughs at his silly faces and funny songs.

I love it when I overhear them talking to each other, when they don't know I'm listening and Ryan is totally rocking the brother role and "teaching" Weston things.

I love how he so desperately climbs up my legs and when I bend to scoop him up, he flies into my arms and buries his head in the crook of my neck.

I love the way Weston lunges for my chest when he wants some nursing cuddles. And how he loves the same kind of "taggy" blanket his brother does.

I love the sounds of laughter and squeals from the bathtub each night while they see who can catch the water from the faucet.

I love the way they both try to crawl away from me when I put lotion on them but as soon as I rub their cute little legs the lay still and get sleepy.

I love that the Lord made them brothers and that He made them my children.

weston go.

Everyone warned me it would happen. The cool factor of the new baby would wear off and Ryan would be over him. Start acting out, being more difficult, throwing fits..

WELL I am happy to say that none of that has happened yet but after a long day yesterday with 2 cranky kiddos and Weston getting more physical attention- Ry climbed up on my lap and told me "Weston go"

What buddy? Weston go where?

"Weston go back in mommy's tummy, I'm done"

It broke my heart because I know his love tank has not been filled lately. We havent been cuddling enough, I havent carried him around enough. We havent snuggled in bed long enough at night.

I am making a goal this weekend to spend some more quality TLC time with my eldest. I am not too worried about the long term effects however because right after he said he was done with his brother he climbed on top of him and proceeded to cover him in slobbery kisses and use his high pitched "Im talking to a baby" voice to say I love your guts... over and over.

They are going to be just fine :)

raising my sons

I hope that I am the one to raise my sons all the days of their lives. I am their mama, I know every inch of them, I know what they need without them even asking. I know their laughs, their cries, their looks.
But sometimes hard things happen. Sometimes mama's dont get to be there for their children's lives, sometimes they are needed more in heaven than here on earth. If that were ever the case I know that my sons will be loved and looked after so well. They have so many amazing people in their lives- they are so incredibly lucky.
There are some things I want them to know, and do. There are things that I try to do every day that I hope would continue on-
Tell them you love them at least 10 times a day. Tell them they are special, Jesus loves them, they are born to do great things. Tell them they are brave and strong. Make sure they say their prayers every night, have family home evening once a week I dont even care if its on Monday's.
Give them lots of TLC. Hug them constantly, carry them around even if they are old enough to walk. Hold their hands, tickle their backs (or their faces they LOVE that) Cuddle on the couch. Rub your hands through their hair. Dont let them cry or be scared. Kiss their boo boo's
Lay in bed with them before they fall asleep. Read lots of books, sing songs about Jesus, sunshine, and even hot dogs. Talk about everything, share secrets, tell stories, recap your day. Ask them questions to get them talking.
Let them get balloons from Nordstrom, eat m&m cookies at Panera, stop by the park and let them run around in the sun or rain. Take lots of walks. Write them notes and mail them back to the house. Color pictures and put them on the fridge. Have movie nights at home with pop corn and the lights out. Enjoy tickle fights and building forts.
Give them bubble baths and let them play til the water is cold and they are wrinkly raisins. Give them Eskimo kisses and do our secret handshake. Build towers with blocks and knock them over- repeat over and over again. Rock them to sleep sometimes, even when they are big. Let them sleep in bed with you and be the little spoon.
Reward and praise good behavior and try to forget the bad. Give them treats. Remind them that Heaven is wonderful, that we all get to live there together again someday. That Jesus is there too and he loves us.

Tell them mommy loves them to the moon and back.

my not-so-much two peas in a pod

Same genes I promise. I have had a few people mention that they look nothing alike. Its totally true! If Weston had been away from me at any point in the hospital I would have thought I had the wrong baby. However they are both completely adorable, in their own ways!

feeling it

Its been 3 weeks of heavenly bliss at our house. I dont know if it was hubs being home from work for over 2 weeks, the heavy pain meds, or just mama adrenalin but I have been LOVING life with 2 babies. Things have been easy, I have felt somewhat rested, and we have been in a good grove.
3 weeks old

But now I am feeling the reality of 2 kids. 2 kids in diapers, 2 that dont always want to eat well, 2 that dont sleep when they are supposed too, 2 that cry at the same time, 2 that want to be held at the same time. I knew this would happen eventually but I am lucky if I get out of my pj's by 4pm and we do more than just watch movies all day. I will give it another week or so then I am kicking myself into high gear and getting back into a normal schedule.

It is still wonderful however. I love these 2 boys more than words, and they feel the same about each other. They played for 45 minutes without me today.

meeting your best friend

When I found out I was pregnant I was so excited for Ryan to have a sibling. I always knew he would just do better with a side kick, he was not made to be alone. When we found out we were having another boy I was elated. Two boys, 2.5 years apart. I hoped they would be best friends.

We debated back and forth about bringing Ryan to the hospital to meet Weston. He doesnt have any good hospital experiences and the whole place just really gives Ryan the heebie-jeebies. I was gone 2 nights and both were really hard on him, he is used to sleeping in our bed and was really worried that I wasnt there on the pillow next to him. He would cry "mommy home" over and over. So we figured it was better to bring him to see us.
I had to take a discharge "how to care for your baby" kind of class since it had been over 2 years since my last birth (like I had forgotten or something) When I was wheeling Weston down the hall way in his bassinet I heard hubs and Ryan playing in my hospital room. I stopped the bed just outside the door and did my mama whistle that Ryan always answers to. He RAN to give me the biggest hug and despite tons of stitches I dropped down to my knees to give him one back. I judged his overall demeanor and decided that the snack kitchen would be our first stop before we threw his new brother at him. After some juice and a cup of fruit we all settled into the hospital room.
Daddy told him in the car that he was going to go meet "baby es" so he was more than excited when I pulled him out of the bassinet. I asked him who it was and he knew right away and told me he came out of my tummy! Of course he wanted to hold him as soon as he could.
He climbed up on my bed and while I was grabbing my camera I laid Weston down and Ryan crawled over and said "Hi baby es!" he patted his tummy, gave him a hug and a kiss all on his own without any coaching. I think my heart literally exploded with love for these two boys at that moment. I was so worried about how I would cope with being a mom of two, would I love them both the same, would I favor one over the other, would I feel like I had enough love for the both of them? The answer to that is YES.
He loved holding Weston and was so careful with his head and making sure he was safe in his arms, I didnt have to help him much and when he was done he kindly told me so. He told us we could bring him back to our house :) I know we are only 5 days into this big brother thing but its going really well. I really think they will be bestest buds as they grow up. Ryan is so helpful already, he always comes over and gives him hugs and kisses and says hello. He gets me diapers and finds the pacie and anything else his baby needs. I know it wont be like that every day and we will have our struggles but doesnt every good sibling relationship have those? Best friends forever right here baby.

But, things arent perfect. Ryan is super grossed out by Westons "belly button maker" he thinks its a bug or something and every time I change him he slowly backs away in the other direction. Twice he has actually started to throw up and was dry heaving. His eyes get all red and watery and he gags, its so sad/funny at the same time. I told him he had a belly button maker when he was a baby too and that resulted in a "noooooooooo!" with his hands grabbing his belly. Hopefully Westons will fall off soon and then we can move on with things. In the the meantime I just feel bad for the poor kid.

All in all we love having these 2 boys, they love having each other. We are so blessed things are amazing.
